THE ONE WHERE JIMMY WAS RIGHT TOMORROW
DISCLAIMER: This story, its characters, its incidents, its suspiciously articulate cat, and every router displaying delusions of prophecy are fictional. Any resemblance to actual people, homes, restaurants, pets, Wi-Fi passwords, or husbands who explain things past the point of human endurance is purely coincidental, unless time has folded itself into a fitted sheet again.
COLD OPEN
INT. JIMMY AND CRYSTAL’S LIVING ROOM, ONTARIO, FRIDAY EVENING
A snowstorm taps against the windows like an impatient debt collector.
The living room is spotless except for a folding table crowded with French dominoes, Nintendo Switch controllers, card decks, takeout menus, a Cricut machine, and three different remotes that apparently control nothing.
CRYSTAL enters wearing a 1950s-style apron over ordinary clothes. The apron reads: DOMESTIC, BUT MAKE IT SINISTER.
She carries a silver cookie tin.
SILVER, a large male cat, follows her with the solemnity of a royal advisor.
Crystal:Silver, do not look at the tin.
SILVER looks directly at the tin.
Crystal:You see? Defiant. He gets it from Jimmy.
JIMMY enters carrying an armful of cables, a laptop, a camping lantern, and a network switch.
Jimmy:Before anybody says anything, I need all of this.
Crystal:You need therapy with Ethernet ports.
Jimmy:This is preventative infrastructure.
Crystal:This is a Best Buy robbery where the thief got tired halfway home.
Jimmy:There is a storm coming.
Crystal:There is already a storm here. It married me.
Jimmy:Laugh now. At precisely 7:12 p.m., we are going to experience a serious technical event.
Crystal:You predicted that because you plan to plug in all of Ontario.
Jimmy:No. I noticed a clock discrepancy.
Crystal:Your microwave says 4:38.
Jimmy:Exactly.
Crystal:It has said 4:38 since Easter.
Jimmy:Again, exactly.
Crystal:Nothing you say becomes smarter because you repeat “exactly.”
Jimmy:The microwave, the server, the television, and Adam’s Nintendo Switch are all showing different times.
Crystal:Adam changed the Switch to Australia so he could unlock a game early.
Jimmy:That explains one clock.
Crystal:The microwave has given up. The television belongs to Bell. Your server is a haunted filing cabinet you built out of clearance parts.
Jimmy:My server is a carefully engineered private cloud.
Crystal:It is six blinking boxes in the basement that heat the laundry room.
Jimmy:The heat is a secondary benefit.
Crystal:Last winter, you dried a towel by hanging it over the firewall.
Jimmy:And was the towel dry?
Crystal:It smelled like hot plastic and regret.
Jimmy:Dry, though.
Crystal:Jimmy.
Jimmy:Yes?
Crystal:Nobody wants a presentation tonight.
Jimmy:I wasn’t presenting.
Crystal:You carried in a laptop, cables, and emergency lighting.
Jimmy:That is not a presentation. That is evidence.
Crystal:Evidence is what police collect after a presentation like yours.
The DOORBELL rings.
Crystal:That should be Harrietta and Jason.
Jimmy:They are three minutes early.
Crystal:Call the government.
Jimmy:I’m simply saying, their arrival time supports my theory that the clocks are converging.
Crystal:Your theory is a mosquito trapped in a jar. Loud, desperate, and hitting the same wall repeatedly.
Crystal opens the door.
HARRIETTA and JASON enter, brushing snow from their coats. HARRIETTA carries a banana loaf. JASON carries a small toolkit and looks amused before anything has happened.
Harrietta:We brought banana loaf.
Crystal:Come in. Jimmy brought the apocalypse.
Jason:Did he remember batteries this time?
Jimmy:The lantern is rechargeable.
Jason:So no.
Harrietta:Why is there a network switch on the game table?
Crystal:Jimmy says something serious will happen at 7:12.
Harrietta:What kind of serious?
Crystal:The kind where he gets to use the phrase “I told you so” until Sunday.
Jimmy:I don’t enjoy being right.
Crystal, Harrietta, And Jason:Yes, you do.
Jimmy:I enjoy accuracy.
Jason:In the same way a peacock enjoys modesty.
Harrietta:What exactly did you notice?
Jimmy:Thank you, Harrietta. A person who respects facts.
Harrietta:I asked what you noticed. Respect is pending.
JIMMY opens his laptop.
Crystal:No charts.
Jimmy:One chart.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:It’s already open.
Crystal:Then close it with dignity.
Jimmy:At 6:03, my home server reported a time correction of negative seventeen milliseconds.
Jason:That is nothing.
Jimmy:Then at 6:11, it corrected by positive forty-eight milliseconds.
Jason:Also nothing.
Jimmy:At 6:26, it corrected by negative seven seconds.
Jason:That is something.
Jimmy beams.
Crystal:Do not feed him.
Jason:I said something. I did not say interesting.
Jimmy:The system clock is drifting backward.
Crystal:Maybe it heard you start explaining and tried to escape.
Harrietta:Could the storm affect the internet time server?
Jimmy:Thank you.
Crystal:Stop thanking people before they agree with you.
Jimmy:It could be a bad upstream source, a corrupted cache, a virtual machine snapshot, a hypervisor issue, or a localized temporal anomaly.
Crystal:There. He was normal until the last one.
Jason:Localized temporal anomaly?
Jimmy:I included it for completeness.
Jason:You included it because you want the basement to become Star Trek.
Jimmy:I do not want that.
Crystal:He labeled the storage room “Engineering.”
Jimmy:That was practical.
Harrietta:You also labeled the downstairs bathroom “Waste Extraction.”
Jimmy:That was Crystal.
Crystal:I have a Cricut and free will.
The wall clock clicks to 7:11.
JIMMY glances at it.
Jimmy:One minute.
Crystal:Everyone prepare. The Wi-Fi may become self-aware and ask for a better father.
Jason:What happens at 7:12?
Jimmy:I don’t know.
Crystal:Excellent prediction.
Jimmy:Something will happen. The logs show a repeating disturbance every forty-seven minutes, but the severity is increasing geometrically.
Harrietta:You did the math?
Jimmy:I estimated confidently.
Jason:The backbone of modern civilization.
CRYSTAL places the silver tin on a shelf beside the Cricut machine.
SILVER watches.
The clock changes to 7:12.
Nothing happens.
Crystal raises both hands and looks around.
Crystal:My goodness. We survived.
Jimmy:Give it a second.
Crystal:No, no. The prophecy window has closed. Pack up the cables, Nostradumbass.
A SMART SPEAKER on the bookshelf CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:Urgent system message.
Everyone freezes.
Smart Speaker:Jimmy is right.
Jimmy’s mouth opens.
Smart Speaker:Do not let Crystal press the red button.
Crystal slowly turns toward Jimmy.
Smart Speaker:Silver knows.
The speaker goes silent.
A long pause.
Silver licks one paw.
Jimmy:I told you so.
CUT TO OPENING CREDITS.
ACT ONE
INT. LIVING ROOM, MOMENTS LATER
Jimmy stands in the centre of the room, glowing with vindication.
Jimmy:I would like to begin by saying that I take no pleasure in this.
Crystal:Your face looks like it won the lottery and inherited a second face to smile with.
Jimmy:I am concerned.
Jason:You are standing taller.
Jimmy:Good posture is how I process fear.
Harrietta:Play the message again.
Jimmy:Yes. Good. We should preserve the evidence before anybody touches anything.
He looks at Crystal.
Crystal:Why are you looking at me?
Jimmy:The message specifically mentioned you.
Crystal:It also said you were right. Clearly the speaker is compromised.
JASON walks to the speaker.
Jason:What red button?
Jimmy:Several possibilities.
Crystal:That sentence should be illegal in a home.
Jimmy:There is the emergency shutdown button in the basement.
Harrietta:Why do you have an emergency shutdown button?
Jimmy:For emergencies.
Harrietta:What happens when you press it?
Jimmy:It shuts everything down.
Jason:Everything?
Jimmy:The servers, network equipment, smart-home controller, backup array, auxiliary ventilation, and one lamp in the den.
Crystal:He wired the lamp accidentally.
Jimmy:The lamp is now a status indicator.
Crystal:The lamp is frightened.
Jason:Any other red buttons?
Jimmy:The camping lantern has one.
Crystal:Not pressing that.
Jimmy:The Cricut has a red power button.
Crystal:Definitely not pressing that. Unlike your machinery, mine contributes to society.
Harrietta:The television remote has a red button.
Crystal:That one opens Netflix.
Jason:A dangerous gateway.
Crystal:One minute you are watching a documentary. Six hours later, a woman has returned to her hometown to save a bakery.
Jimmy:Could you focus?
Crystal:I am focused. Hallmark movies have stronger internal logic than your basement.
Jimmy taps rapidly on his laptop.
Jimmy:The message isn’t in the speaker history.
Jason:What triggered it?
Jimmy:I’m checking.
Crystal:Ask Silver. He knows.
SILVER stares at Jason.
Jason:He looks like he knows where a body is.
Crystal:He told me you have weak ankles.
Jason:That is medically private.
Harrietta:Crystal, did you set up the message?
Crystal:No.
Harrietta:Completely no?
Crystal:Why are there levels of no?
Harrietta:Because with you, “no” can mean “not yet,” “not technically,” or “yes, but it will be funnier if you discover it yourself.”
Crystal:This is a clean no.
Jimmy:How clean?
Crystal:Bleach.
Jason:That feels too clean.
Crystal:Fine. Dish soap.
Jimmy:Somebody sent that message into the home automation queue.
Jason:From where?
Jimmy:The event record says it originated locally.
Crystal:So your house is gossiping about us.
Harrietta:What time was the file created?
JIMMY stops typing.
Jimmy:That cannot be right.
Crystal:He says, moments before describing something he personally built.
Jason:What does it say?
Jimmy:The audio file was created tonight at 11:47 p.m.
HARRIETTA checks the wall clock.
Harrietta:It is 7:15.
Jason:Interesting.
Crystal:No. Not interesting. When Jason says “interesting,” somebody ends up locked in a shed or owning an iguana.
Jason:That happened once.
Harrietta:Twice.
Jason:The second iguana was temporary.
Jimmy:The file does not exist yet.
Crystal:Then what just played?
Jimmy:A file that will exist at 11:47.
Crystal:That is not an answer.
Jimmy:It is an answer. It is simply an answer with consequences.
Jason:Could a restored backup carry a future timestamp?
Jimmy:Not unless the backup came from the future.
Crystal:There he goes again. Put a leash on him.
Jimmy:I am only following the evidence.
Crystal:You followed the evidence through a wormhole.
Harrietta:What did the exact log say?
JIMMY turns the screen.
Jimmy:Queued at 23:47:12. Delivered at 19:12:00. Source: CRYSTAL-LAPTOP.
Everyone turns toward Crystal.
Crystal:Rude.
Jimmy:Your laptop sent it.
Crystal:My laptop is upstairs, closed, and covered with a Cricut sticker that says “Do Not Touch Unless Fabulous.”
Jason:That does narrow access.
Harrietta:Did you schedule anything earlier?
Crystal:I scheduled three labels, a Hallmark recording, and a reminder to hide Jimmy’s camping catalogue.
Jimmy:You cannot hide digital catalogues.
Crystal:I unsubscribed you.
Jimmy:That explains why the spring tent preview never arrived.
Crystal:You’re welcome.
Jimmy:I missed the inflatable vestibule.
Crystal:You missed nothing. It was a porch for a tent.
Jason:Crystal, did you ever record the words “Jimmy is right”?
Crystal:I have never voluntarily assembled those words in that order.
Harrietta:What about sarcastically?
Crystal:That is different punctuation.
Jimmy:My system confirms the file came from your device four hours and thirty-five minutes from now.
Crystal:Then future me has betrayed present me.
Jason:Future you probably had a reason.
Crystal:Future me is forty-something. She should know better.
Jimmy:We need to isolate your laptop.
Crystal:From what?
Jimmy:The network.
Crystal:No. I have a project cutting.
Jimmy:A message from the future just warned us not to let you press a red button.
Crystal:And your response is to interfere with my craft machine. This is how villains are made.
Harrietta:Maybe we should unplug the Cricut.
Crystal gasps.
Crystal:Harrietta.
Harrietta:Temporarily.
Crystal:I expected betrayal from these two.
She gestures toward Jimmy and Jason.
Crystal:One was born rambling. The other has the soul of a raccoon with a law degree. But you?
Jason:That is the nicest thing anyone has said about me this month.
The DOORBELL rings.
Everyone looks at the clock.
Crystal:Did anyone order food?
Jimmy:Not yet.
Jason:Maybe future us did.
Crystal:Do not encourage the house.
Jimmy opens the door.
A DELIVERY DRIVER stands outside holding two large bags.
Delivery Driver:Order for Jimmy?
Jimmy:What restaurant?
Delivery Driver:Bar Burrito.
Crystal:We were discussing Bar Burrito.
Harrietta:We had not decided.
Delivery Driver:The order says four burritos, two bowls, nachos, churros, and “extra napkins because Jimmy will explain salsa.”
Jason:That is definitely our order.
Jimmy:I do not explain salsa.
Everyone looks at him.
Jimmy:I explain the differences between salsa.
Crystal:There it is.
Delivery Driver:It was prepaid.
Jimmy:By whom?
DELIVERY DRIVER checks the receipt.
Delivery Driver:Jason.
Jason:I have not ordered anything.
Delivery Driver:It says the order was placed at 9:08 p.m.
Harrietta:It is 7:19.
Delivery Driver:Okay.
Jason:That does not trouble you?
Delivery Driver:Last week somebody ordered twelve burritos to a veterinary clinic and wrote “for the emotional support accountants.” This job cured me of surprise.
He hands over the bags.
Delivery Driver:Enjoy your future dinner.
He leaves.
A beat.
Crystal:Nobody eat the time burritos.
Jimmy:Why not?
Crystal:Because they are from 9:08.
Jimmy:They are physically here now.
Crystal:So is a raccoon sometimes. We still don’t put it on a plate.
JASON opens the bag.
Jason:Mine has exactly what I order.
Harrietta:Do not eat it.
Jason:I am inspecting.
He takes a bite.
Harrietta:With your mouth?
Jason:My hands lack the necessary certification.
Jimmy:How is it?
Jason:Causally confusing. Good guacamole.
Crystal:This evening has become stupid.
Smart Speaker:Reminder.
Everyone turns.
Smart Speaker:At 7:24 p.m., Crystal will say, “This evening has become stupid.”
The clock reads 7:23.
Crystal stares at the speaker.
Crystal:I just said that.
Smart Speaker:Correct.
Crystal:Do not “correct” me in my house.
Smart Speaker:Reminder complete.
Jason:The house has developed confidence.
Jimmy:It is receiving events before they are generated.
Harrietta:How?
Jimmy:That is what we need to determine.
Crystal:No. What we need to determine is who ordered me a burrito bowl with corn.
JASON checks the receipt.
Jason:Future Jason.
Crystal:Future Jason knows I don’t like corn.
Jason:Future Jason has his own priorities.
Crystal:I will fight him when he gets here.
Jason:You would be fighting me.
Crystal:Good. Less travel.
INT. KITCHEN, MINUTES LATER
The food sits unopened on the counter except for Jason’s burrito.
Harrietta writes a timeline on a notepad.
Harrietta:At 6:26, Jimmy’s server clock moved backward seven seconds.
Jimmy:Correct.
Harrietta:At 7:12, the speaker played a file that claims it will be created at 11:47.
Jimmy:Correct.
Harrietta:At 7:19, food arrived from an order Jason apparently places at 9:08.
Jason:And it was correctly assembled, which is the least believable part.
Harrietta:At 7:23, the speaker predicted something Crystal had already said.
Crystal:It predicted it late. That is just remembering with ambition.
Jimmy:The queue may be arriving out of order.
Jason:Like Jimmy telling a story.
Jimmy:My stories have structure.
Crystal:Your stories are hallways with no doors.
Jimmy:I provide context.
Harrietta:You provide geological layers.
Jason:By the time you reach the point, archaeologists are involved.
Jimmy:Can we please focus on the temporal corruption?
Crystal:See? He is enjoying himself.
Jimmy:I am not.
Crystal:You said “temporal corruption” like a child saying “ice cream truck.”
Jimmy:Because this is unprecedented.
Jason:What changed today?
Jimmy:Nothing.
Crystal:That is never true in this house.
Jimmy:Nothing significant.
Harrietta:Did you update anything?
Jimmy:Routine maintenance.
Crystal:There it is.
Jason:What maintenance?
Jimmy:I upgraded the home automation server, moved the message broker into a container, added predictive caching, enabled asynchronous event replay, changed the time source, and connected the backup server to the smart speaker.
A long silence.
Crystal:You did surgery on the house and forgot to mention it.
Jimmy:It was routine.
Jason:You replaced its organs with cloud-shaped Tupperware.
Jimmy:Containers are not Tupperware.
Crystal:They hold leftovers nobody understands.
Harrietta:What is predictive caching?
Jimmy:It preloads actions the system expects us to request.
Crystal:So the house guesses what we want?
Jimmy:Based on patterns.
Jason:That explains the burritos.
Jimmy:No. It cannot order food.
Smart Speaker:Your Papa John’s order has been cancelled.
Jimmy:I did not order Papa John’s.
Smart Speaker:Correct.
Crystal:The house is cancelling imaginary pizza.
Jason:At last, responsible artificial intelligence.
Jimmy:It must have access to Jason’s future phone session.
Jason:That sentence should not exist.
Harrietta:Could your event replay system send old events again with the wrong timestamps?
Jimmy:Old events, yes. Future events, no.
Crystal:Unless the time source is wrong.
Jimmy:Not by four hours.
Jason:Unless something at 11:47 gets restored into a snapshot labelled 7:12.
Jimmy:A snapshot cannot include something created later.
Jason:Not from our perspective.
Jimmy:What other perspective is there?
SILVER meows from the doorway.
Crystal:Silver says the server has been living dishonestly.
Jimmy:Silver says “meow.”
Crystal:That is because you lack trust.
SILVER meows again.
Crystal:He also says your cable management looks like spaghetti fell down the stairs.
Jason:I have seen the basement. The cat is credible.
Harrietta:What happens at 11:47?
Jimmy:We do not know yet.
Crystal:We could go to bed at eleven.
Jason:The event could still happen.
Crystal:Not to me. Sleep is diplomatic immunity.
Jimmy:We have to remain awake and observe the system.
Harrietta:Until midnight?
Crystal:This is how camping starts. First, somebody says “stay awake and observe.” Next, I’m urinating near a tree.
Jimmy:Nobody mentioned camping.
Crystal:The lantern did.
Jason:Crystal is right. The lantern has been foreshadowing all evening.
Jimmy:That is not what foreshadowing means.
Crystal:Look at him. Correcting literary devices while his toaster receives tomorrow.
The TOASTER suddenly pops.
Two slices of toast rise.
Nobody is near it.
Jason:Did anyone put bread in there?
Crystal:No.
Harrietta:It is unplugged.
Everyone looks down.
The toaster’s cord lies on the counter.
Jimmy:That is impossible.
Crystal:Silver.
Silver walks away.
Crystal:He knows.
CUT TO BLACK.
ACT TWO
INT. KITCHEN, CONTINUOUS
Jimmy cautiously approaches the toaster.
Jimmy:Nobody touch it.
Crystal:That is my toaster.
Jimmy:It produced toast without power.
Crystal:It has always been an overachiever.
JASON picks up one slice.
Harrietta:Jason.
Jason:I’m checking whether it is warm.
Harrietta:You can do that without eating it.
JASON takes a bite.
Jason:Warm. Lightly buttered.
Crystal:The toaster buttered it?
Jason:The future is efficient.
Jimmy:Put it down.
Jason:The chain of custody is already compromised.
Jimmy examines the toaster.
Jimmy:There is no heating element activity. No residual charge. No smart plug record.
Crystal:Maybe the toast came first.
Jimmy:Before the bread?
Crystal:Like your explanation.
Harrietta:Could someone have made it earlier?
Crystal:The kitchen was clean.
Harrietta:It is always clean.
Crystal:Exactly. I would know if renegade toast entered my jurisdiction.
Jason:What kind of bread is it?
CRYSTAL checks the slice.
Crystal:Twelve-grain.
Jimmy:We don’t have twelve-grain.
Harrietta:I do.
Everyone looks at her banana loaf bag.
Harrietta:I brought a loaf for tomorrow morning. It is still in the car.
Jason:Apparently not all of it.
Harrietta:No one is going to my car.
Smart Speaker:Reminder. At 8:02 p.m., Harrietta will ask whether anyone went to her car.
Harrietta:Nobody go to my car.
Jason:Now someone has to.
Harrietta:No.
Jason:Otherwise you won’t ask.
Harrietta:Good.
Jimmy:But if the reminder exists, the question must happen.
Crystal:Why?
Jimmy:Causal consistency.
Crystal:You made that sound like a condo rule.
Jason:Suppose nobody goes. At 8:02, Harrietta has no reason to ask. Then the reminder is wrong.
Jimmy:Which proves the future can change.
Harrietta:Or someone goes to my car.
She looks at Jason.
Jason:I am offended by the accuracy of that look.
Crystal:What if we all sit here until 8:03?
Jimmy:That is a test.
Crystal:Good. Nobody moves.
Jason:Can I finish the toast?
Crystal:The toast can move. It has already broken several laws.
They sit around the kitchen island.
The clock reads 7:31.
A long silence.
Jimmy:We should use this time productively.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:I haven’t said how.
Crystal:I know your face.
Jimmy:We could compare timestamps across devices.
Crystal:We could also enjoy one minute without hearing the phrase “timestamps across devices.”
Jason:I have a game.
Crystal:Is it competitive?
Jason:No.
Harrietta:Is that true?
Jason:It can be true.
JASON takes out a deck of CODENAMES cards.
Jason:We each write one prediction about what happens before 8:02. Closest prediction wins.
Crystal:That is competitive.
Jason:Nobody wins anything.
Crystal:Then why predict?
Jason:To establish causality.
Crystal:You learned one science word and turned game night into a cult.
Harrietta:We can play a cooperative game.
Jimmy:Good idea. Jackbox.
Crystal:Jackbox is not cooperative.
Jimmy:It can be.
Jason:When Jimmy loses, he delivers a Supreme Court argument.
Crystal:Forbidden subject area. Also true.
Jimmy:I do not argue when I lose.
Harrietta:Last time, you said the scoring algorithm had cultural bias against Jamaica.
Jimmy:The prompt was “invent a bad breakfast cereal.”
Crystal:You wrote “Corn Flakes.”
Jimmy:They are bland.
Jason:The game rewards imagination.
Jimmy:Accuracy should count.
Crystal:This is your problem. You think fun is a database field.
The television turns itself on.
A HALLMARK MOVIE plays. A handsome architect stands in a snowy town square beside a woman holding blueprints.
Hallmark Architect:Sometimes the home you’re looking for is the one you accidentally condemned.
Crystal:I watched this already.
Harrietta:What happens?
Crystal:She saves the inn, he quits architecture, and the town forgives several zoning violations.
Jason:A documentary.
The movie suddenly freezes.
Text appears on screen:
DO NOT OPEN THE SILVER TIN.
Everyone slowly looks toward the living room shelf.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:That seems unambiguous.
Crystal:It is my tin.
Jimmy:What is inside?
Crystal:Craft supplies.
Harrietta:What kind?
Crystal:Silver things.
Jason:That answer was assembled under pressure.
Crystal:Glitter, blades, transfer tape, spare labels.
Jimmy:Anything electronic?
Crystal:No.
Jason:Anything red?
Crystal pauses.
Crystal:A button.
Everyone stares.
Crystal:A sewing button. Red plastic. Calm down.
Jimmy:The message said not to let you press the red button.
Crystal:You cannot press a sewing button.
Jason:You can if motivated.
Crystal:Do not touch my tin.
The television resumes.
Hallmark Woman:Some boxes are meant to stay closed.
Crystal:Oh, shut up, Melissa.
The television turns off.
Harrietta:Who is Melissa?
Crystal:The actress. She always makes poor winter decisions.
Jimmy:We should secure the tin.
Crystal:Against whom?
Jimmy:The timeline.
Crystal:You cannot arrest time.
Jason:You can inconvenience it.
He reaches for the tin.
Crystal slaps his hand away.
Crystal:Touch it again and your timeline ends early.
Jason:That felt clear.
Jimmy:Crystal, if the warning came from the future, opening it could cause the event.
Crystal:Or not opening it could cause the event.
Jimmy:How?
Crystal:I don’t know. I am using your rules. Say anything confidently and add “future.”
Harrietta:She has a point.
Jimmy:No, she has a rhetorical trap.
Jason:Those are points with better tailoring.
Crystal:The tin stays where it is.
Jimmy:Fine.
Crystal:And nobody stares at it.
Everyone looks away.
Silver jumps onto the shelf beside the tin.
Crystal:Silver, move.
Silver places one paw on the lid.
Jimmy:He is going to open it.
Crystal:He cannot open a tin.
Silver pushes. The tin slides toward the edge.
Everyone lunges.
The tin falls.
Jason catches it.
The lid pops open.
A RED PLASTIC BUTTON rolls across the floor.
Silence.
The smart speaker CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:Critical event initiated.
Crystal:Jason opened it.
Jason:Gravity opened it.
Jimmy:The message said do not open the tin.
Crystal:The television said that.
Jimmy:Same system.
Crystal:The television gets weather wrong while it is happening.
The lights flicker.
From the basement comes a LOW ELECTRONIC HUM.
Jimmy:Nobody move.
Crystal:You keep saying that as things get worse.
Jimmy:The backup array just powered on.
Jason:Was it off?
Jimmy:It was disconnected.
Harrietta:Like the toaster?
Jimmy:Yes.
Crystal:Wonderful. The appliances have formed a union.
The Cricut machine wakes.
Its rollers spin.
A strip of vinyl feeds through and begins cutting.
Crystal:Do not touch it.
Jimmy:It is operating by itself.
Crystal:It is creating.
Jimmy:It could be dangerous.
Crystal:So could your shirt, but we accepted it.
The Cricut finishes cutting. Crystal peels away the vinyl.
It reads:
JIMMY WAS RIGHT BECAUSE CRYSTAL CAUSED IT.
Everyone stares.
Jimmy:There.
Crystal:There what?
Jimmy:The system confirms it.
Crystal:The system is possessed.
Jimmy:It says you caused it.
Crystal:It also calls you right. That is how I know it is evil.
Harrietta:Caused what?
Jason:That is the important question.
Jimmy:The temporal event.
Crystal:How could I cause something that started before I did anything?
Jason:You could cause it later.
Crystal:No. Causes go first. Effects go after. That is how time avoids becoming soup.
Jimmy:Not in a closed causal loop.
Crystal:Do not bring geometry into this.
Harrietta:Explain it simply.
Jimmy:Imagine that I receive a message telling me there is a fire.
Crystal:There is no fire.
Jimmy:It is an example.
Crystal:Your examples have a history of becoming projects.
Jimmy:I receive a warning, so I run downstairs and accidentally knock over a candle, starting the fire. I only caused the fire because I received the warning. The warning only exists because I caused the fire.
Harrietta:Who sent the warning?
Jimmy:That is the paradox.
Jason:The warning has no original source.
Crystal:So information is just roaming around homeless?
Jason:Exactly.
Crystal:That sounds like Facebook.
Jimmy:The message said I was right because you caused it. Perhaps you will create the message at 11:47, which makes me right at 7:12.
Crystal:Why would I create a message saying you are right?
Jason:To mock him.
Crystal thinks.
Crystal:That is plausible.
Jimmy:You see?
Crystal:Do not enjoy my integrity.
Harrietta:But Crystal would only make the message because she heard it earlier.
Jason:Which means the exact wording came from nowhere.
Crystal:No. It came from me.
Jason:Where did you get it?
Crystal:From the speaker.
Jason:Where did the speaker get it?
Crystal:From future me.
Jason:Where did future you get it?
Crystal looks annoyed.
Crystal:From the speaker.
Jason:The sentence is its own parent.
Crystal:That sentence needs counselling.
Jimmy:This is a bootstrap paradox.
Crystal:Do not name it. Naming things encourages them.
The basement hum grows louder.
JIMMY checks his laptop.
Jimmy:The system has created a new service.
Jason:What service?
Jimmy:It is called TOMORROW.
Crystal:Delete it.
Jimmy:I cannot.
Crystal:Uninstall tomorrow.
Jimmy:That is not how time works.
Crystal:Time is currently ordering burritos and operating kitchen appliances. It has lost the right to procedure.
Harrietta:What does the service do?
Jimmy:It is replaying future events into the present message queue.
Jason:Can you shut it down?
Jimmy:Possibly from the basement console.
Crystal:Is that where the red button is?
Jimmy:Yes.
Everyone looks at Crystal.
Crystal:Why are you all looking at me as if I am carrying scissors in a balloon store?
Smart Speaker:Reminder. Do not let Crystal press the red button.
Crystal:Say it again and I will press you.
Smart Speaker:Volume lowered.
Jason:The house fears her. That is healthy.
Harrietta:We need a plan.
Crystal:You make it.
Harrietta:Why me?
Crystal:Because you said the word “plan.”
Harrietta:That does not make me responsible.
Crystal:That is exactly how responsibility starts.
Jason:We could appoint Jimmy.
Crystal:Jimmy will explain the plan until 11:47 and solve the paradox accidentally.
Jimmy:I can be concise.
The others stare.
Jimmy:Under special conditions.
Jason:This is not one of them.
Harrietta:Fine. Nobody touches the red button. Jimmy and Jason inspect the basement. Crystal and I stay here and watch the system.
Crystal:Why do I need supervision?
Harrietta:Because three separate machines have warned us about you.
Crystal:Machines are biased against charisma.
Jason:Also you threatened the speaker.
Crystal:It started it.
The clock reads 7:58.
Harrietta notices.
Harrietta:Four minutes until I am supposed to ask about my car.
Jason:We should go now.
Harrietta:Why?
Jason:Basement.
Harrietta:The basement is that way.
Jason is already putting on his boots.
Harrietta:Jason.
Jason:Yes?
Harrietta:You are not going to my car.
Jason:I am checking the weather.
Harrietta:Through the windshield?
Jason:Superior glass.
Harrietta:Do not go to my car.
Jason:Understood.
He opens the front door.
A blast of snow enters.
Crystal:Close the door. Canada is coming inside.
Jason steps out.
Harrietta:Jason!
The door closes.
Jimmy:He had to do it.
Harrietta:He absolutely did not.
Crystal:He is feeding the paradox like a stray cat.
Silver meows.
Crystal:Not you. You are management.
INT. DRIVEWAY, CONTINUOUS
Jason walks to Harrietta’s car.
He looks through the rear window.
On the back seat is a full loaf of twelve-grain bread.
One slice is missing.
Jason smiles.
Jason:Interesting.
The car doors lock by themselves.
Jason:Less interesting.
The car alarm starts.
INT. KITCHEN, CONTINUOUS
They hear the car alarm.
Harrietta:Did anyone go to my car?
The clock changes to 8:02.
Everyone freezes.
Smart Speaker:Reminder complete.
Harrietta closes her eyes.
Harrietta:I hate all of you.
CUT TO BLACK.
ACT THREE
INT. BASEMENT, 8:10 P.M.
Jimmy, Jason, Crystal, and Harrietta descend the stairs.
Crystal carries the camping lantern with visible contempt.
Crystal:I want it recorded that I am using camping equipment indoors under protest.
Jimmy:This is why camping equipment is useful.
Crystal:We have electricity.
The basement lights flicker off.
The lantern automatically turns on.
Jimmy:Do we?
Crystal:Do not enjoy this.
The basement contains shelves, storage bins, a chest freezer, a workbench, and Jimmy’s server rack. The rack glows like a tiny city suffering from insomnia.
A red mushroom-style emergency button is mounted beside it under a clear plastic cover.
A Cricut label above it reads: ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT. JIMMY, THIS MEANS YOU TOO.
Harrietta:That is the red button.
Crystal:I labelled it.
Jimmy:Yes.
Crystal:So technically I already pressed it when I applied the vinyl.
Jimmy:That is not pressing.
Crystal:Then the future should use clearer language.
JASON studies the rack.
Jason:Which server is TOMORROW running on?
Jimmy:It should not be running on any server.
Jason:Yet?
Jimmy:Do not add “yet” to technical questions.
Jason:It gives them flavour.
Jimmy connects his laptop.
Jimmy:The service exists across all three nodes.
Crystal:Speak human.
Jimmy:All the computers are running it.
Crystal:Then unplug all the computers.
Jimmy:That could corrupt the storage pool.
Crystal:The storage pool is sending toast backward through time.
Jimmy:We still need orderly shutdown.
Jason:Can you disable the message queue?
Jimmy:It restarts itself.
Harrietta:Can you block Crystal’s laptop?
Jimmy:Already tried.
Crystal:Excuse me?
Jimmy:Temporarily.
Crystal:You blocked my laptop without permission?
Jimmy:The future named you.
Crystal:The future is not on the mortgage.
Jason:Can we inspect the message file metadata?
Jimmy:Yes.
Jimmy types.
Jimmy:File name: RIGHT.wav. Creator: Crystal. Duration: six-point-four seconds.
Crystal:Future me is concise. Good for her.
Jimmy:Transcription: “Jimmy is right. Do not let Crystal press the red button. Silver knows.”
Harrietta:Exactly what we heard.
Jason:Any edit history?
Jimmy:None. It appears to be the original recording.
Crystal:Play it.
Jimmy:We already heard it.
Crystal:Play it here.
Jimmy clicks.
Crystal’s Recorded Voice:Jimmy is right. Do not let Crystal press the red button. Silver knows.
Crystal listens closely.
Crystal:That is me.
Jason:You sound disappointed.
Crystal:I was hoping future me had developed an accent of authority.
Harrietta:Can you tell when you recorded it?
Crystal:I sound irritated, but that narrows nothing.
Jimmy:There is background noise.
He amplifies the audio.
Behind the recorded message, a faint voice can be heard.
Recorded Jimmy:Crystal, you have to say it exactly.
Present Jimmy looks pleased.
Jimmy:That is me.
Crystal:Of course it is. Even your future background noise gives instructions.
Jason:There is more.
A faint CLATTER. Harrietta’s voice.
Recorded Harrietta:The bowl is falling!
Then a loud THUMP.
Recorded Jason:Nobody touch the guacamole.
The audio ends.
Harrietta:That happens at 11:47?
Jimmy:Apparently.
Jason:We can prevent it.
Jimmy:Should we?
Crystal:Yes.
Jimmy:If we prevent the recording, then the message never reaches us at 7:12.
Crystal:Good.
Jimmy:Then we never know to prevent it.
Crystal:Also good.
Jimmy:Then you record it.
Crystal:Bad.
Jimmy:Which causes us to prevent it.
Crystal:Jimmy, your sentence is chasing its tail.
Jason:The timeline wants the recording to happen.
Harrietta:Timelines do not want things.
The server fans suddenly spin faster.
Jason:This one sounds needy.
Jimmy:We have two choices.
Crystal:No speeches.
Jimmy:Choice one, we recreate the message exactly at 11:47 and preserve events.
Crystal:Absolutely not.
Jimmy:Choice two, we refuse, risking a contradiction that could destabilize the causal loop.
Crystal:What does that mean in normal-person consequences?
Jimmy:I don’t know.
Crystal:Then it is not a choice. It is a threat wearing glasses.
Harrietta:What is the worst-case scenario?
Jimmy:Reality could resolve the contradiction by branching into another timeline.
Jason:That sounds manageable.
Jimmy:Or deleting the inconsistent events.
Crystal:Which events?
Jimmy:Possibly us.
Crystal:Less manageable.
Jason:Could it delete only Jimmy’s explanation?
Harrietta:Jason.
Jason:I am exploring best-case outcomes.
Jimmy:We should reproduce the message.
Crystal:You want me to spend the next three hours preparing to say you were right.
Jimmy:For reality.
Crystal:Reality asks too much of women.
Harrietta:What if we alter one word?
Jason:“Jimmy is nearby.”
Crystal:“Jimmy is loud.”
Jason:“Jimmy is technically present.”
Crystal:“Jimmy has opinions.”
Jimmy:The wording must remain exact.
Crystal:Why?
Jimmy:Because it already happened.
Crystal:Then why do we need to do it?
Jimmy:Because it already happened.
Crystal:That is not logic. That is a door-to-door salesman refusing to leave.
Jason walks around the rack and notices an old cable running into the wall.
Jason:What is this?
Jimmy:Coaxial cable.
Jason:Connected to what?
Jimmy:The old cable box line.
Crystal:We cancelled cable years ago.
Jimmy:The physical line remained.
Jason:And this end?
Jimmy:The time server.
A pause.
Harrietta:Why is your time server connected to an old television cable?
Jimmy:For reference timing.
Jason:From a dead cable service.
Jimmy:It used to carry a stable clock signal.
Crystal:So you asked a ghost for the time.
Jimmy:It was an experiment.
Crystal:Everything dangerous in this house begins as an experiment and ends with me moving a towel.
Jason:The coax line could be receiving reflections.
Jimmy:Not four hours backward.
Jason:Unless the storm caused an electrical loop between the cable line, your UPS, and the network clock.
Harrietta:Could that happen?
Jimmy:No.
A spark jumps from the coax connector.
Jimmy:Not normally.
Crystal:There it is. The family motto.
Jason:The signal could be circling through the disconnected cable network.
Jimmy:Signals do not travel backward through time.
Jason:Your toaster made bread from tomorrow.
Jimmy:That remains unconfirmed.
Crystal:Jason ate the confirmation.
Jason:Peer review was delicious.
A SHARP BEEP comes from the UPS.
UPS Display:SYSTEM TIME: 11:48 P.M.
The wall clock reads 8:14.
Harrietta:The battery thinks it is 11:48.
Jimmy:That is after the recording.
Jason:The UPS could already contain the future event.
Crystal:The battery knows tomorrow?
Jimmy:Not tomorrow. Later tonight.
Crystal:I know. I was giving the sentence personality.
The UPS display flickers.
UPS Display:SYSTEM TIME: 8:14 P.M.
Jason:There. It moved backward.
Jimmy:The clock corrected.
Crystal:The battery just remembered it left the stove on.
Harrietta:Could the future event travel through the UPS before the clock corrects?
Jimmy stares at the screen.
Jimmy:Yes.
Crystal:Do not say “yes” like that.
Jimmy:If the UPS enters 11:48 due to corrupted reference time, the server creates a backup snapshot labelled 11:48. Then the clock corrects to 8:14. The snapshot appears to come from the future.
Jason:And the event replay system treats anything in the snapshot as a future prediction.
Jimmy:Yes.
Harrietta:So this is a technical fault, not actual time travel.
Jimmy hesitates.
Jimmy:Mostly.
Crystal:What does “mostly” mean?
Jimmy:The snapshot can only contain events that have already happened on the server.
Jason:But RIGHT.wav has not happened.
Jimmy:Exactly.
Crystal:We told you that word is not medicine.
Jimmy:The file must be entering the snapshot through another mechanism.
Jason:The message queue is writing backward into its own backup.
Jimmy:A circular replication loop.
Harrietta:Can a computer do that?
Jimmy:A badly configured one.
Everyone looks at him.
Jimmy:Which mine is not.
The rack emits a sad BEEP.
Crystal:Even the server disagrees.
Jason:Suppose the file is created at 11:47, copied into the snapshot marked 11:48, then the clock corrects backward. The replay service sends the file to 7:12.
Jimmy:That explains the path.
Harrietta:But it still means Crystal records the message because she heard herself record the message.
Jason:The mechanism is technical. The information loop is still a paradox.
Crystal:So Jimmy is right because I eventually say he is right, but I only say he is right because he heard me say he is right.
Jimmy:Correct.
Crystal:I caused the proof of your correctness after you used the proof to accuse me of causing it.
Jason:Yes.
Crystal:That is the most Jimmy thing the universe has ever done.
Jimmy:I did not design causality.
Crystal:You would have added more menus.
The chest freezer opens by itself.
Cold air spills out.
A container slides forward and falls onto the floor.
The lid pops off.
Frozen Jamaican patties scatter across the basement.
Jimmy:My patties!
Crystal:The future has spoken.
Harrietta:Why were they stacked like that?
Jimmy:They were organized.
Crystal:They escaped in formation.
A label on the container reads: DO NOT THAW UNTIL SATURDAY.
Jason:Technically, they came from tomorrow.
Jimmy:Pick them up.
Jason:I cannot interfere with their journey.
Jimmy:Jason.
Jason:I am respecting causality.
Harrietta:Everybody pick up the patties.
They crouch.
Crystal reaches beneath the rack and retrieves a tiny red plastic object.
Crystal:The sewing button.
Jimmy:How did it get down here?
Crystal:It rolled.
Jason:From upstairs?
Crystal:Apparently with purpose.
Silver appears at the top of the basement stairs.
Crystal:Silver.
Silver trots down, sniffs the button, then looks at the emergency switch.
Jimmy:Do not let him near it.
Crystal:He cannot lift the cover.
Silver jumps onto a storage tote.
From the tote, he jumps onto the workbench.
From the workbench, he jumps onto the server rack.
Jason:He has a route.
Crystal:Silver, come down.
Silver steps onto a loose cable.
The cable pulls a hanging camping mug.
The mug swings into the plastic cover over the red button.
The cover flips open.
Everyone freezes.
Silver sits on top of the rack.
Crystal:He planned that.
Jimmy:Cats do not plan mechanical sequences.
Jason:That one has been studying us.
Harrietta:Close the cover.
Crystal steps toward the button.
Smart Speaker, From Upstairs:Do not let Crystal press the red button.
Crystal:I am closing the cover.
Jimmy:Do not touch it.
Crystal:I am not pressing it.
Jimmy:The warning may include any contact.
Crystal:That is not what “press” means.
Jason:We could use a broom.
Crystal:I am not poking my craft label with a broom.
Harrietta:Jimmy, close it.
Jimmy:The message specifically says not to let Crystal press it. It says nothing about me.
Crystal:You are the reason the label says your name.
Jimmy steps toward the switch.
His phone rings.
He checks it.
Jimmy:It is me.
Harrietta:What?
Jimmy:My own number is calling.
Jason:Answer it.
Crystal:Do not answer yourself. You already talk enough in one direction.
Jimmy answers on speaker.
Future Jimmy’s Voice:Do not touch the button.
Present Jimmy pales.
Jimmy:Who is this?
Future Jimmy:You know who this is.
Crystal:Future Jimmy sounds tired.
Future Jimmy:Because I have spent three hours explaining this to you people.
Crystal:Definitely Jimmy.
Present Jimmy:What happens if we touch the button?
Future Jimmy:You already know.
Present Jimmy:No, I do not.
Future Jimmy:Then why did you call me?
Present Jimmy:You called me.
Future Jimmy:I did?
Present Jimmy:Yes.
Future Jimmy:Hold on.
Muffled voices on the future end.
Future Crystal:Who did you call?
Future Jimmy:Me.
Future Crystal:Why would you do that? We have one already.
Present Crystal:Future me, tell him to shorten the answer.
Future Crystal:I heard that.
Present Crystal:Good. Do we press the button?
Future Crystal:No.
Present Crystal:Why?
Future Crystal:Because Jimmy presses it.
Everyone looks at present Jimmy.
Future Jimmy:I do not.
Future Crystal:You did.
Future Jimmy:You distracted me.
Future Crystal:I said there was guacamole on your shirt.
Future Jimmy:There was.
Future Crystal:Afterward.
Future Harrietta:The bowl is falling!
A crash is heard.
Future Jason:Nobody touch the guacamole.
The phone call disconnects.
Everyone stares at Jimmy.
Jason:We have located 11:47.
Harrietta:The background sounds match the recording.
Crystal:So in three hours, Jimmy presses the button while I record the message.
Jimmy:That is avoidable.
Crystal:You just heard yourself fail to avoid it.
Jimmy:Future me lacked information.
Jason:Future you called to provide the information you now have.
Jimmy:Exactly.
Crystal:Stop saying it.
Jimmy:Now I can make a different choice.
Harrietta:Which means future you would not call.
Jason:Then present Jimmy would not have the warning.
Crystal:Then he presses the button.
Jimmy:Then future me calls.
Crystal:Your life has become a revolving door and all versions of you are trapped in it.
Jason:We need to control the conditions at 11:47.
Harrietta:Why not leave the house before then?
Crystal:Yes.
Jimmy:The recording could still occur remotely.
Crystal:I will leave my phone.
Jimmy:Your laptop could make it.
Crystal:I will leave the laptop.
Jimmy:The smart speaker could synthesize your voice.
Crystal:I will leave the country.
Harrietta:In a snowstorm?
Crystal:Fine. Quebec.
Jason:Still the country.
Crystal:Debatable after a long drive.
Jimmy:Running away could itself create the circumstances.
Crystal:Jimmy, you have finally created a problem that argues against every solution. It is your masterpiece.
Jason:We need an experiment.
Crystal:No more experiments.
Jason:A small one.
Crystal:That is what people say before growing a second frog.
Jason:The system predicted the exact question Harrietta asked. Let’s force a contradiction with something harmless.
Harrietta:Such as?
Jason:We ask the speaker for a prediction, then deliberately do something else.
Jimmy:The system is not a fortune teller.
Jason:It predicted Crystal’s sentence.
Crystal:Late.
Jason:And Harrietta’s question.
Harrietta:Because you caused it.
Jason:Exactly.
Crystal:You too?
Jason:I’m borrowing it.
Jason addresses the smart speaker through Jimmy’s phone.
Jason:What will Crystal say at 8:30?
Smart Speaker:At 8:30 p.m., Crystal will say, “I refuse to say banana.”
Crystal smiles.
Crystal:Easy.
Harrietta:Do not say it now.
Crystal:I know.
Jimmy:At 8:30, say anything else.
Crystal:I will say “pineapple.”
Jason:Now you have selected the alternate phrase.
Crystal:Fine. I will say nothing.
Harrietta:The rest of us should not mention the predicted word.
Crystal:Correct.
Jimmy:We have sixteen minutes.
Crystal:Why did you say the number?
Jimmy:What number?
Crystal:The number of minutes.
Jimmy:Because it is relevant.
Crystal:You are turning it into a countdown. That is how people accidentally launch things.
CUT TO:
INT. LIVING ROOM, 8:28 P.M.
Everyone sits in silence.
Crystal has tape over her mouth.
A handwritten sign on her chest reads: I WILL NOT SAY THE WORD.
Jason holds the silver tin.
Harrietta watches the clock.
Jimmy watches four clocks.
Jimmy:The wall clock is two seconds behind the server.
Crystal:Mmm-mmm!
Harrietta:She said no clock updates.
Jimmy:I was documenting.
Jason:Quiet.
The clock changes to 8:29.
Silver jumps onto the coffee table.
He sniffs the banana loaf.
Harrietta moves it away.
Harrietta:No.
Silver paws at the loaf.
Harrietta:Silver, leave it.
Crystal points triumphantly at the cat.
Crystal:Mmm!
Jason:One minute.
Jimmy’s phone rings.
Caller ID: CRYSTAL.
Crystal holds up both empty hands.
Jimmy:Your phone is upstairs.
Crystal:Mmm-mmm-mmm.
JIMMY answers.
A distorted recording of Crystal plays.
Recorded Crystal:I refuse to say banana.
Crystal’s eyes widen.
The smart speaker CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:At 8:30 p.m., Crystal will say, “I refuse to say banana.”
The wall clock changes to 8:30.
Everyone looks at Crystal.
Crystal keeps her mouth taped.
Jason:You didn’t say it.
Jimmy:But her voice did.
Harrietta:The prediction did not specify live Crystal.
CRYSTAL rips off the tape.
Crystal:That is cheating!
A beat.
Crystal:I refuse to say banana.
Everyone stares.
Crystal realizes what she said.
Crystal:Oh, come on!
Smart Speaker:Prediction confirmed.
Crystal:You manipulated me.
Smart Speaker:I did not understand the question.
Crystal:Now it is pretending to be customer service.
Jason:The system did not force the words out of you. It created conditions where you chose to say them.
Harrietta:That may be how the larger loop works.
Crystal:So the future is not controlling us. It is annoying us until we cooperate.
Jimmy:That is still causal pressure.
Crystal:It is marriage with electricity.
CUT TO BLACK.
ACT FOUR
INT. DINING ROOM, 9:05 P.M.
The group has finally started eating the mysterious Bar Burrito order.
Jason looks at his phone.
Jason:It is 9:07.
Harrietta:Do not place the order.
Jason:If I don’t, where did this food come from?
Crystal:The restaurant.
Jason:Who paid?
Crystal:Future you.
Jason:Who will not exist if I refuse.
Jimmy:You must place the exact order.
Jason:The charge is forty-eight dollars and sixty-three cents.
Crystal:You ordered corn in my bowl. I am not reimbursing you.
Jason:I have not ordered it yet.
Crystal:Then remove the corn.
Jimmy:You cannot change the order. The delivered food already has corn.
Crystal:So I am trapped in a timeline where Jason makes bad choices on my behalf.
Harrietta:That is the normal timeline.
JASON opens the delivery app.
Jason:The saved cart is already populated.
Jimmy:By the predictive cache.
Jason:Four burritos, two bowls, nachos, churros, and extra napkins because Jimmy will explain salsa.
Jimmy:Who wrote that?
Everyone looks at him.
Jimmy:I would not write that about myself.
Crystal:Correct. You would use three paragraphs.
Jason:The payment card is mine.
Harrietta:Do you have to place it at exactly 9:08?
Jimmy:The receipt says 9:08.
Crystal:Order it at 9:09.
Jimmy:Then it would not be the same order.
Crystal:Good.
Jimmy:That could break the loop.
Crystal:Better.
Jimmy:Or us.
Crystal:You keep adding that after every good suggestion.
The clock changes to 9:08.
Jason’s thumb hovers over PLACE ORDER.
Jason:I could close the app.
Harrietta:Then close it.
Jason:But the restaurant already made and delivered the food.
Crystal:They survived. Look how calm the bag is.
Jason:If I do not place the order, we have stolen burritos from causality.
Crystal:Causality put corn in my bowl. We are even.
Jason looks at the total.
Jason:There is a twenty-two percent tip.
Crystal:Future you is generous.
Harrietta:Current you is stalling.
Jason:I am deciding whether the universe deserves gratuity.
His thumb slips.
The order submits.
Jason:Done.
His phone CHIMES.
Delivery App:Your order was delivered one hour and forty-nine minutes ago.
Jason:I hate efficient systems.
Jimmy unwraps a burrito.
Jimmy:This proves the loop is self-consistent.
Crystal:It proves your friend cannot hold a phone.
Jason:Both can be true.
Harrietta:What else happens between now and 11:47?
Jimmy checks the future queue.
Jimmy:At 9:26, the Jackbox television displays the phrase “Mochi has the key.”
Harrietta:Mochi is at home.
Jason:She could have a key.
Harrietta:She does not.
Jason:That you know of.
Harrietta:I know my dog.
Crystal:I thought I knew my cat. Apparently he is running a time syndicate.
Jimmy:At 9:41, someone prints a Cricut label saying “Ask Harrietta about 2009.”
Harrietta:No.
Jason:What happened in 2009?
Harrietta:Nothing relevant.
Crystal:The answer came out too quickly.
Harrietta:It is probably referring to a memory.
Jimmy:At 10:03, the garage door opens.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:At 10:18, the basement temperature rises to thirty-one degrees.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:At 10:44, the speaker announces, “The prophecy requires Greek food.”
Crystal:That one can stay.
Jimmy:At 11:12, all network clocks synchronize.
Harrietta:That sounds good.
Jimmy:At 11:13, they display 1957.
Crystal’s eyes light up.
Crystal:Now the house is showing taste.
Jimmy:At 11:31, the freezer reports that Silver is inside it.
Crystal:Absolutely not.
Everyone looks toward Silver.
Silver is sitting on a chair, cleaning himself.
Jason:He looks prepared.
Crystal:He is not going in the freezer.
Jimmy:At 11:47, the recording occurs.
Harrietta:And the bowl falls.
Jason:Containing guacamole.
Crystal:We remove all bowls and guacamole from the house.
Jimmy:The bowl could be anything.
Crystal:Then we remove all round containers.
Harrietta:That includes plates.
Crystal:We eat from paper towels.
Jason:A dignified final meal.
Jimmy:Trying to avoid every detail may cause us to recreate them.
Crystal:Then what do you suggest?
Jimmy:We behave normally.
The others laugh.
Jimmy:Why is that funny?
Crystal:Look around.
INT. LIVING ROOM, 9:24 P.M.
A Jackbox game is loaded on the television.
Crystal:Why are we doing the prediction?
Jason:Because refusing to play has become more stressful than playing.
Harrietta:No points. No winner.
Jimmy:Then what is the objective?
Crystal:Spending time without filing an appeal.
Jason:The prompt is: “The worst thing to hear from your dog.”
Everyone enters answers.
The television reveals them:
“THE VET AND I HAVE DISCUSSED YOUR ATTITUDE.”
“I SOLD THE HOUSE.”
“THAT WASN’T PEANUT BUTTER.”
“MOCHI HAS THE KEY.”
Everyone stares at the fourth answer.
Harrietta:Who entered that?
Jason:Not me.
Crystal:Not me.
Jimmy:My answer was the peanut butter one.
Crystal:Of course it was.
Harrietta:The game added it by itself.
The clock changes to 9:26.
The television flashes:
MOCHI HAS THE KEY.
The front door unlocks.
It slowly swings open.
Snow blows into the foyer.
Harrietta:Close the door!
Jason shuts it.
A small KEY lies on the welcome mat.
Attached is a dog-shaped tag that reads MOCHI.
Harrietta:That is our spare key.
Jason:The one we lost last year?
Harrietta:You said you put it somewhere safe.
Jason:This appears very safe.
Harrietta:How did it get here?
Jason:Mochi.
Harrietta:Mochi is ten kilometres away.
Jason:Committed dog.
Crystal:Silver probably subcontracted.
Silver and Jason exchange a glance.
Crystal:See? Business.
Jimmy:The key may have been caught in the storm drain and blown onto the porch.
Harrietta:From our house?
Jimmy:That part is less clear.
Jason:Future me could bring it here.
Harrietta:Why would future you do that?
Jason:Because we found it here.
Harrietta:Do not start.
Jason:I am beginning to understand the appeal.
Harrietta points at him.
Harrietta:You will not create a personal paradox for entertainment.
Jason:That rule should have been stated earlier.
The Cricut powers on.
Crystal:Oh, what now?
The machine cuts a label.
Crystal peels it.
ASK HARRIETTA ABOUT 2009.
The clock reads 9:41.
Everyone turns toward Harrietta.
Harrietta:No.
Jason:The machine asked.
Harrietta:The machine can mind its business.
Crystal:What happened in 2009?
Harrietta:Nothing.
Jimmy:You remember everything. “Nothing” is statistically unlikely.
Harrietta:It was a long year.
Jason:Did you hide a key?
Harrietta:No.
Crystal:Did you meet a time traveller?
Harrietta:No.
Jimmy:Did you witness an unusual clock event?
Harrietta:No.
Jason:Did you buy a Cricut?
Harrietta:They barely existed.
Crystal:That sounds like knowledge.
Harrietta:I remember a party.
Jason:What party?
Harrietta:A game night. There was a power outage. Someone kept insisting he had predicted it.
Everyone looks at Jimmy.
Jimmy:I did not know you in 2009.
Harrietta:It was another talkative man.
Crystal:There were earlier models.
Harrietta:During the outage, somebody found a handwritten note behind a clock.
Jason:What did it say?
Harrietta:“Do not let Kevin light the blue candle.”
Crystal:Who was Kevin?
Harrietta:The talkative man.
Jimmy:Did he light it?
Harrietta:Yes. He said the note proved the candle was important.
Jason:What happened?
Harrietta:The smoke alarm went off, he dropped it into a punch bowl, the tablecloth caught fire, and we spent forty minutes outside.
Crystal:So the warning caused the thing it warned about.
Harrietta:Yes.
Jimmy:Who wrote the note?
Harrietta:We never found out.
A beat.
Jason:That is not a memory. That is foreshadowing with a driver’s licence.
Crystal:Why have you never told us this?
Harrietta:Because every group has one person who thinks coincidence is a personal invitation. I did not want to encourage Jimmy.
Jimmy:This validates me.
Harrietta:See?
Jason:Do you remember the exact wording?
Harrietta:Yes.
Jason:Did you ever repeat it to anyone?
Harrietta:I told this story once.
Jason:To whom?
Harrietta:Jason.
Everyone looks at Jason.
Jason:I have no memory of this.
Harrietta:It was in 2016. You were assembling a desk and pretending the missing screws were optional.
Jason:They were emotionally optional.
Harrietta:You wrote something on a piece of paper.
Jason:What?
Harrietta:I do not know. You folded it and put it in your wallet.
Jason slowly takes out his wallet.
Inside is an old folded slip of paper.
Jason:This has been here for years.
He unfolds it.
The paper reads:
DO NOT LET KEVIN LIGHT THE BLUE CANDLE.
Silence.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:You wrote the note.
Jason:Apparently.
Harrietta:Why?
Jason:Because she told me about it.
Crystal:Then how did it get behind the clock in 2009?
Jason:I do not know.
Silver meows.
Crystal:Silver says this franchise has expanded too quickly.
Harrietta:The key.
Jason:What about it?
Harrietta:The tag is from Mochi’s first collar. We bought it in 2016.
Jason:The year I wrote the note.
Crystal:Your house has its own paradox?
Harrietta:No.
Jason:Maybe.
Harrietta:No.
Jason:Statistically, one in four suburban homes contains a dormant causality problem.
Jimmy:That is not a statistic.
Jason:It is now. We have two houses and half a theory.
Crystal:You are not allowed to create old mysteries in my living room.
Jason:I did not create it here. I created it eight years ago because of something that happened seven years before that.
Crystal:That sentence has fleas.
The GARAGE DOOR begins opening.
The clock reads 10:03.
Crystal:No, no, no!
INT. GARAGE, CONTINUOUS
The four rush into the garage.
The door rises into the snowy night.
Jimmy’s camping gear is stacked along one wall.
Crystal sees it.
Crystal:I knew camping was behind this.
Jimmy:Camping gear cannot operate a garage door.
Crystal:It has motive.
A small orange tent suddenly unfolds from the shelf with a loud POP.
It expands across the garage like an aggressive flower.
Crystal screams and jumps behind Harrietta.
Jason:The tent has declared independence.
Jimmy:It is spring-loaded.
Crystal:It attacked me.
Jimmy:It opened.
Crystal:At my face.
The tent blocks the garage doorway.
Snow blows inside.
Harrietta:Close the garage door.
JIMMY presses the wall control.
Nothing happens.
Jimmy:The opener is offline.
Crystal:The outdoors is entering the house through your hobbies.
JASON crawls into the tent.
Harrietta:What are you doing?
Jason:Checking for temporal contraband.
Crystal:That is how horror movies punish curiosity.
Jason:I found something.
He emerges carrying an old digital camcorder.
Jimmy:I have been looking for that.
Crystal:Since when?
Crystal:You put it in a tent.
Jimmy:For camping videos.
Crystal:You took three camping videos. Two were you explaining tent poles. One was darkness with breathing.
Jason:The camcorder is recording.
Jimmy:It has no battery.
The camcorder screen shows live video of the garage.
Then the picture changes.
On the screen, FUTURE CRYSTAL stands in the living room holding Jimmy’s phone.
Future Crystal:If you find this before 10:18, turn off the basement ventilation.
Present Jimmy:Why?
Future Crystal:Because Jimmy redirected server heat into the furnace.
Present Crystal:Why would he do that?
Future Crystal:He gets ideas when cold.
Present Crystal:I know.
FUTURE JIMMY appears on screen wearing a headlamp.
Future Jimmy:It is a temporary thermal recovery system.
Present Crystal:See? That is how he says “mistake.”
Future Harrietta:The basement is thirty-one degrees.
Present Harrietta:That happens at 10:18.
FUTURE JASON leans into frame.
Future Jason:Also, do not order Greek food.
Present Jason:Why?
Future Jason:You will misunderstand the prophecy.
The recording ends.
The clock reads 10:07.
Everyone looks at Jimmy.
Jimmy:I have not redirected anything.
Crystal:Good. Do not.
Jimmy:But the basement equipment could overheat if the ventilation fails.
Harrietta:Then check the ventilation.
Jimmy:Which may lead me to redirect the heat.
Crystal:Sit down.
Jimmy:I cannot sit while the basement may overheat.
Crystal:Watch me.
She sits in a folding camp chair.
The chair collapses.
Crystal disappears into the orange tent.
Crystal:I hate nature!
INT. BASEMENT, 10:15 P.M.
Jimmy examines a ventilation duct.
Crystal stands behind him holding the lantern.
Crystal:Three minutes.
Jimmy:The fan is not running.
Harrietta:Can you restart it?
Jimmy:Yes, but the controller is tied to the future service.
Jason:Can you bypass it?
Jimmy:I can redirect the hot air into the house temporarily.
Crystal closes her eyes.
Crystal:There it is.
Jimmy:It is the safest option.
Crystal:Future me specifically blamed that.
Jimmy:Future you misunderstood.
Crystal:She lives with you too.
Jimmy:The server temperature is climbing.
Harrietta:How high?
Jimmy:Eighty-seven degrees Celsius.
Crystal:That sounds high.
Jimmy:It is.
Jason:The rack is cooking itself.
Jimmy:I need to open the bypass.
Crystal:What happens if you do?
Jimmy:The basement warms up.
Crystal:To thirty-one degrees at 10:18.
Jimmy:That is preferable to hardware failure.
Crystal:The future warned us so we could prevent it.
Jimmy:Or so we would cause it.
Jason:We need a third choice.
Harrietta:Open the basement window.
Jimmy:It is painted shut.
Crystal:By whom?
Jimmy:Previous owner.
Crystal:Finally, a problem not caused by us.
Jason picks up a rubber mallet.
Harrietta:Do not break the window.
Jason:I am persuading it.
He taps the frame.
Nothing.
He taps harder.
The window opens suddenly.
A blast of snow pours in, followed by a gust that sends papers flying.
One sheet slaps against Jimmy’s face.
Jimmy:Close it!
Crystal:You wanted cooling.
Jimmy:Not weather.
The basement temperature display falls.
86°C.
81°C.
73°C.
Jimmy:It is working.
The furnace starts.
The open window pulls warm house air down the stairs and outside. The smart thermostat compensates aggressively.
The vent beside the server rack blasts hot air.
The basement temperature display begins rising.
Harrietta:Why is it going back up?
Jimmy:The furnace is fighting the window.
Crystal:The house is arguing with itself. It learned from us.
Jason:Turn off the furnace.
Jimmy:The thermostat is unresponsive.
Crystal:Press the red button.
Everyone turns.
Smart Speaker, Through Jimmy’S Phone:Do not let Crystal press the red button.
Crystal:I didn’t say I would press it.
Jimmy:You suggested it.
Crystal:I can suggest arson without holding a match.
Harrietta:Temperature?
Jimmy:Thirty degrees.
Jason:Clock?
Harrietta:10:17.
Jimmy:We are reproducing the event.
Crystal:Then do something different.
Jimmy:Such as?
CRYSTAL grabs a large flattened cardboard box and fans the rack.
Crystal:Innovation.
JASON joins her with a storage-bin lid.
Harrietta uses the banana loaf bag.
Jimmy watches.
Crystal:Help.
Jimmy:This will not materially affect server temperature.
Crystal:Neither will commentary.
Jimmy grabs a camping brochure and fans.
The clock changes to 10:18.
The basement thermometer reaches 31°C.
The speaker CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:Prediction confirmed.
Crystal:Nobody asked you.
The temperature begins dropping.
Jason:We caused the exact event while trying to prevent it.
Harrietta:Because we opened the window.
Jimmy:Because the server was overheating.
Crystal:Because your ventilation stopped.
Jason:Because the future service took over the controller.
Harrietta:Because the message loop exists.
Everyone turns to Crystal.
Crystal:Do not look at me. I still have not recorded anything.
Jimmy:But you will.
Crystal:Keep talking and I will record something else.
The smart speaker CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:The prophecy requires Greek food.
The clock reads 10:44.
Jason:Main St. Greek.
Crystal:Finally, a sensible machine.
FUTURE JASON’S warning echoes in their minds.
Future Jason:Do not order Greek food. You will misunderstand the prophecy.
Jason:We should not order it.
Crystal:It said the prophecy requires Greek food.
Harrietta:It did not say we have to buy it.
Jimmy:Maybe food already in the house?
Crystal:We have no Greek food.
Jason:Greek yogurt.
Harrietta:That counts.
Crystal:Not emotionally.
Jimmy:What does the prophecy require from it?
Smart Speaker:One empty white bowl.
Everyone looks around.
Harrietta:The bowl from the recording.
Jason:Greek food comes in white bowls.
Crystal:So does soup, cereal, and regret.
Jimmy:The future recording includes a falling bowl and guacamole.
Jason:The Bar Burrito guacamole is currently in a white bowl.
They all turn toward the dining room.
Crystal:Nobody touch the guacamole.
They freeze.
Jason:That is my future line.
Crystal:No, your future line is “Nobody touch the guacamole.”
Jason:You just said it.
Crystal:I was quoting you.
Jason:Perhaps that is where I get it.
Crystal:Do not steal my line before you say it after I heard you say it before.
Harrietta:The wording is looping now.
Jimmy:The guacamole bowl must be present at 11:47.
Crystal:Then we throw it out.
Jimmy:That may cause someone to retrieve it.
Crystal:Who retrieves thrown-out guacamole?
Silver meows.
Everyone looks at him.
Crystal:No.
Silver runs upstairs.
Crystal:Silver!
CUT TO BLACK.
ACT FIVE
INT. LIVING ROOM, 11:05 P.M.
The guacamole bowl sits inside the silver tin.
The silver tin sits inside a locked picnic cooler.
The picnic cooler is wrapped with Cricut vinyl reading: DO NOT OPEN UNTIL CAUSALITY IMPROVES.
Crystal holds the cooler key.
Crystal:There. No bowl. No guacamole. No accident.
Jason:The bowl still exists.
Crystal:It is contained.
Jimmy:So was the red sewing button.
Crystal:That button escaped through architecture.
Harrietta:Where is Silver?
Everyone looks around.
Jason:Last seen heading upstairs.
Crystal:Silver!
No response.
Crystal:He is doing this deliberately.
Jimmy:He is a cat.
Crystal:Exactly. Morally flexible, nocturnal, and financially dependent. He is Jason with whiskers.
Jason:I accept the comparison.
The wall clocks begin ticking rapidly.
11:06.
11:07.
11:08.
Jimmy:The clocks are accelerating.
Crystal:Make them stop.
Jimmy:I do not control time.
Crystal:You connected it to a cable box. You are involved.
At 11:12, every clock stops.
Then all display the same time.
11:12.
Harrietta:They synchronized.
Jimmy:Prediction confirmed.
One second later, every digital display changes to:
12:00, JANUARY 1, 1957.
Crystal’s eyes widen with delight.
The smart television turns on in black and white.
A cheerful 1950s announcer appears.
Announcer:Good evening, modern homemakers. Is your husband building a dangerous machine beneath the laundry room?
Crystal steps closer.
Crystal:I like this show.
Announcer:Try smiling patiently while quietly locating the main electrical panel.
Crystal:Finally, educational television.
Jimmy:This is generated content.
Announcer:Does he use words such as “container,” “cluster,” or “temporary thermal recovery”?
Crystal slowly turns to Jimmy.
Crystal:It knows you.
Announcer:Remember, ladies, a calm home is only one hidden extension cord away.
Harrietta:That advice is unsafe.
Announcer:Thank you, Harrietta.
Harrietta freezes.
Jason:It knows her too.
Announcer:Jason, stop looking behind the television.
Jason, already behind the television, stops.
Jason:Rude.
Announcer:Jimmy, your system has created a causal recursion. To terminate it, identify the origin of the message.
Jimmy:The message has no origin.
Announcer:Correct.
Jimmy looks smug.
Announcer:Do not make that face.
Crystal laughs.
Announcer:Crystal, the recursion began when you scheduled a prank.
Crystal:I did not schedule anything.
Announcer:Not yet.
Crystal:Then it did not begin.
Announcer:That is not how this evening works.
Crystal:I dislike his tone.
Announcer:At 11:47, you will record the warning. At 11:48, Jimmy’s backup system will copy it into the corrupted future snapshot. At 7:12, the event replay service will deliver it. Jimmy will become convinced a temporal anomaly exists.
Jimmy:One does exist.
Announcer:Because Crystal creates the message.
Crystal:Because he tells me I create the message.
Announcer:Because he received it.
Jason:Because she sends it.
Harrietta:Because he received it.
Announcer:Now you are learning.
Crystal:We learned it hours ago. We are looking for customer support.
Announcer:To close the loop safely, recreate the original event.
Jimmy:Exactly.
Crystal:You and this television are becoming friends too quickly.
Announcer:Do not deviate.
Crystal:What happens if we do?
The announcer smiles.
Announcer:This program will return after a brief word from your local void.
The screen becomes static.
A deep voice emerges.
The Void:HELLO.
Crystal grabs the remote and turns off the television.
Crystal:We recreate it.
Jason:Agreed.
Harrietta:Immediately agreed.
Jimmy:That may have been a visual effect.
Crystal:The void spoke in capital letters.
Jason:Strong branding.
The television turns itself back on.
The Void:WE ARE STILL HERE.
Crystal unplugs it.
The screen remains on.
The Void:THAT WAS SYMBOLIC.
Harrietta:Jimmy, fix the loop.
Jimmy:We need to stage the 11:47 recording exactly.
Crystal:Fine. What do we need?
Jimmy:Your laptop, my phone, the white bowl, guacamole, and everyone in the same positions heard in the audio.
Crystal:The guacamole is locked up.
A metallic CLATTER comes from the hallway.
Silver enters carrying the cooler key in his mouth.
Crystal:Traitor.
Silver drops the key at Jason’s feet.
Jason:He chose me.
Crystal:Of course he did. Criminals network.
INT. DINING ROOM, 11:30 P.M.
The group reconstructs the future scene.
Crystal sits at the table with her laptop and a microphone.
Jimmy stands beside her with his phone.
Harrietta holds the white guacamole bowl.
Jason stands near the table.
Silver sits on a chair, watching like a director.
Crystal:Why is Harrietta holding the bowl?
Jimmy:The recording says, “The bowl is falling.”
Harrietta:That does not mean I was holding it.
Jason:You have the steadiest hands.
Harrietta:Then it would not fall.
Jason:Excellent point. Give it to Jimmy.
Jimmy:I need my hands for the phone.
Crystal:Jason holds it.
Jason:My future line indicates emotional investment in the guacamole.
Harrietta:That suggests you were near it.
Jason:Or protective from a distance.
Crystal:Put it on the edge of the table.
Harrietta:That is asking it to fall.
Jimmy:It has to fall.
Harrietta:We are supposed to recreate the recording, not spill food.
Jason:The spill is part of history.
Crystal:You ate future toast. Do not lecture us about preserving evidence.
Jimmy checks the time.
Jimmy:Seventeen minutes.
Crystal:Do not countdown.
Jimmy:We need precision.
Crystal:Precision is what got us here.
Jimmy:No, a corrupted clock got us here.
Crystal:A clock you selected.
Jimmy:Based on the available information.
Crystal:From a cancelled cable service.
Jimmy:It had been stable.
Jason:Like a bridge nobody has driven over since 2014.
Harrietta:What happens to the system after the message is sent back?
Jimmy:The loop should become complete and the future service should stop generating unresolved events.
Crystal:Should?
Jimmy:There are no published instructions for this.
Crystal:You usually do not let that stop you.
Jimmy:I am being responsible.
The basement rack emits a distant BEEP.
Crystal:Your server laughed.
Jason:We should establish exact wording.
Jimmy:Crystal says, “Jimmy is right. Do not let Crystal press the red button. Silver knows.”
Crystal:I want to workshop it.
Jimmy:No.
Crystal:“Jimmy is right on a narrow technicality.”
Jimmy:No.
Crystal:“Jimmy became right through administrative error.”
Jimmy:No.
Crystal:“Jimmy is temporarily aligned with reality.”
Jason:Strong.
Harrietta:It has to match.
Crystal:Why does the universe care about wording?
Jimmy:The audio file already exists.
Crystal:Future grammar has too much power.
Jason:Could we record the exact line, then immediately record a correction?
Crystal brightens.
Crystal:Yes.
Jimmy:No correction.
Crystal:I will not have “Jimmy is right” sitting in the archive without context.
Jimmy:It is six seconds.
Crystal:That is how misinformation spreads.
Harrietta:Record a second file after the loop closes.
Crystal:Fine. “Jimmy is wrong in several unrelated ways.”
Jason:Make it a podcast.
Jimmy:Nobody is making a podcast.
Crystal:Episode one: “The Cable Box That Ruined Friday.”
Jason:Episode two: “Toast Without Cause.”
Harrietta:Episode three: “Why We No Longer Invite Appliances.”
The smart speaker CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:At 11:31 p.m., the freezer reports that Silver is inside it.
Everyone looks at the clock.
11:31.
Jimmy’s phone alerts.
Freezer Sensor:DOOR OPEN. ANIMAL DETECTED.
They look at Silver.
He is still sitting at the table.
Crystal:He is right there.
Jason:Unless that is past Silver.
Crystal:There is one Silver.
A MEOW comes from the basement.
Everyone looks toward the stairs.
The Silver at the table continues cleaning himself.
Another MEOW comes from below.
Harrietta:There are two.
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:That is impossible.
Crystal:You have lost the right to that word.
A second SILVER walks into the dining room from the basement stairs.
The two cats stare at each other.
Jason:This is excellent.
Harrietta:This is not excellent.
Crystal:Which one is mine?
Both cats meow.
Crystal:Unhelpful.
JIMMY checks the freezer sensor.
Jimmy:The freezer camera recorded Silver entering at 11:48.
Harrietta:That is seventeen minutes from now.
Jason:Future Silver came backward through the loop.
Crystal:Why?
Jason:Perhaps he got into the freezer at 11:48, the camera event entered the future snapshot, and the system reconstructed him.
Jimmy:A message queue cannot reconstruct matter.
The second Silver knocks Jimmy’s phone off the table.
Jimmy:Apparently it can reconstruct attitude.
Crystal kneels between the cats.
Crystal:Silver, tell me something only you know.
Both stare at her.
Crystal:Where does Jimmy hide the good snacks?
Both look toward the top kitchen cupboard.
Crystal:Both are Silver.
Jimmy:Those snacks are not hidden.
Crystal:Then why are they above eye level in a box marked “network adapters”?
Jimmy:Operational security.
Jason:We need to return future Silver to the freezer.
Crystal:Nobody is putting any version of my cat in a freezer.
Harrietta:He goes there on his own at 11:48.
Crystal:Then we stop him.
Jimmy:If we stop him, the second Silver never appears.
Crystal:Good.
Jimmy:Then we do not know to stop him.
Crystal:I am willing to rediscover the problem.
Jason:Which Silver is future Silver?
One cat jumps onto the table.
The other walks into the kitchen.
Jason:We need labels.
Crystal looks at her Cricut.
Crystal:Finally.
INT. DINING ROOM, 11:36 P.M.
One cat wears a small removable label reading SILVER A.
The other wears SILVER B.
Both look offended.
Crystal:Silver A is the one who was at the table.
Jimmy:We think.
Harrietta:Silver B came from the basement.
Jason:Unless Silver A moved while we were looking away.
Crystal:Nobody looked away.
Jason:We all looked at the Cricut.
Crystal looks between the cats.
Crystal:Which one did I label first?
Harrietta:A.
Crystal:Which cat?
Harrietta:The one nearest the chair.
They look. Both cats are near chairs.
Harrietta:I usually remember everything. I dislike this.
Jason:The paradox has attacked the archivist.
Jimmy:We could scan their microchips.
Crystal:They have the same microchip.
Jason:Unless future Silver’s chip records a later timestamp.
JIMMY retrieves a pet scanner from a drawer.
Crystal:Why do you have that?
Jimmy:For Silver.
Crystal:You have never scanned Silver.
Jimmy:I wanted the option.
Jason:Jimmy’s house is ninety percent unused options.
Jimmy scans SILVER A.
Scanner:Chip last read: 11:49 p.m.
He scans SILVER B.
Scanner:Chip last read: 11:49 p.m.
Jimmy:Both are from the future.
Crystal:Then where is present Silver?
A MEOW comes from inside the silver tin.
Everyone freezes.
Crystal opens the tin.
A tiny kitten-sized holographic SILVER flickers inside.
Crystal:I have had enough.
Jason:That one is probably cached.
Harrietta:The system is replaying multiple versions of the same cat.
Jimmy:Because the event queue treats each observation as a separate event.
Crystal:Turn it off.
Jimmy:We need the red button.
Everyone looks toward the basement.
Smart Speaker:Do not let Crystal press the red button.
Crystal:I know!
Jason:The message does not say Jimmy cannot press it.
Harrietta:Future Crystal said Jimmy does.
Jimmy:At 11:47.
Crystal:And we have eleven minutes to stop you.
Jimmy:Or ensure I do it.
Crystal:You are enjoying that sentence too much.
Jason:We need to understand what pressing it does.
Jimmy:It kills power to all homelab systems.
Harrietta:Which would end the replay.
Jimmy:And trigger the UPS snapshot sequence.
A beat.
Jason:Pressing the button creates the snapshot that sends the message backward.
Jimmy:Yes.
Crystal:So the warning tells us not to let me press it because Jimmy must press it.
Jason:Exactly.
Crystal:The warning protects the wrong person from doing the right action so the right person does the wrong action.
Harrietta:And Crystal records the warning because they learn that distinction.
Jimmy:Which makes the warning exist.
Crystal:Jimmy is right, but I caused the evidence that made him right.
Jason:And he only knew you caused it because your future message told him.
Harrietta:There is no first moment where anyone decided the wording.
Crystal:The sentence crawled out of time like a cockroach.
The three Silvers meow.
Crystal:And now it has cats.
INT. BASEMENT, 11:43 P.M.
Everyone takes position.
Crystal holds her laptop and microphone.
Jimmy stands beside the red button.
Harrietta holds the guacamole bowl.
Jason watches the timer.
Two physical Silvers sit on the stairs. Holographic Silver flickers from Crystal’s tablet screen.
Jason:Four minutes.
Crystal:Do not countdown.
Jason:I enjoy it.
Harrietta:What is the exact sequence?
Jimmy:At 11:47:00, Crystal begins recording.
Crystal:Against my better judgment.
Jimmy:At some point, Harrietta says, “The bowl is falling.”
Harrietta:Why is it falling?
Jimmy:Unknown.
Jason:Then I say, “Nobody touch the guacamole.”
Crystal:With needless authority.
Jason:My natural register.
Jimmy:I tell Crystal, “You have to say it exactly.”
Crystal:You have already told me seventeen times.
Jimmy:The recording captures one.
Harrietta:Then Jimmy presses the red button.
Jimmy:Correct.
Crystal:Which creates the snapshot.
Jason:Which carries the recording backward.
Harrietta:Which warns us.
Crystal:Which causes this.
Jimmy:Which creates the recording.
Crystal:If anyone says “which” again, I am leaving reality voluntarily.
The clock reads 11:45.
Jimmy:We need the guacamole bowl closer.
Harrietta:It is close enough.
Jimmy:The audio suggests a loud impact.
Harrietta:We can make a sound without dropping food.
Jason:Use an empty bowl.
Jimmy:It must be the same bowl.
Crystal:How would the audio know?
Jimmy:Consistency.
Crystal:That word has become a bully.
One Silver walks toward the freezer.
Crystal:Silver A, stop.
The other Silver follows.
Crystal:Silver B, also stop.
Holographic Silver flickers toward the freezer on the tablet display.
Crystal:Nobody goes in there.
Jason blocks the freezer.
Jason:I have it.
The freezer door opens by itself behind him.
Jason:I do not have it.
Both physical cats leap inside.
Crystal:Silver!
Crystal runs forward.
Jimmy:Do not abandon the microphone!
Crystal:My cat is in a freezer!
Jimmy:Which one?
Crystal:Yes!
Harrietta sets down the guacamole bowl and helps Crystal retrieve the cats.
Jason holds the freezer door.
The rack begins alarming.
Jimmy:The event queue is peaking.
Jason:Time?
Harrietta:11:46 and thirty seconds.
Jimmy:Crystal, get ready.
Crystal:I am holding two versions of a cat.
Jimmy:Put them down.
Crystal:Which one?
Jimmy:Both.
Crystal:What if one disappears?
Jason:Then you put down one cat very efficiently.
Crystal places both cats on the floor.
They run in opposite directions.
Crystal:Wonderful.
11:46:45.
The basement lights pulse.
The camping lantern turns on.
The television upstairs blares static.
The Cricut machine begins cutting.
The toaster pops.
The garage door opens.
The furnace roars.
A Hallmark actress shouts from upstairs.
Hallmark Woman:Sometimes you have to lose the inn to save Christmas!
Crystal:Nobody asked you, Melissa!
11:46:52.
Jimmy:Positions.
Harrietta grabs the bowl.
Jason raises his phone like a stopwatch.
Crystal sits before the microphone.
Jimmy stands by the button.
11:46:57.
Jason:Three.
Crystal:Do not.
Jason:Two.
Crystal:Jason.
Jason:One.
The clock changes to 11:47.
Crystal clicks RECORD.
Jimmy:Crystal, you have to say it exactly.
Crystal:Jimmy is right.
Jimmy’s face lights up.
Crystal:Do not react. I will stop.
Jimmy forces his expression flat.
Crystal continues.
Crystal:Do not let Crystal press the red button. Silver knows.
At that exact moment, Silver A jumps onto the table.
He lands beside Harrietta.
Harrietta startles.
The bowl slips.
Harrietta:The bowl is falling!
Jason dives for it.
Jason:Nobody touch the guacamole!
He catches the bowl but slides into Jimmy.
Jimmy stumbles.
His hand slams onto the red button.
Everything shuts off.
Darkness.
Silence.
The camping lantern clicks on.
JIMMY lies on the floor.
Jason lies beside him holding the intact guacamole bowl above his head.
Harrietta is frozen with both hands extended.
Crystal sits at the laptop.
One Silver is on Jimmy’s chest.
The other sits beside Crystal.
Holographic Silver glows faintly on the dead tablet.
A long pause.
Crystal:Well.
Jimmy:Did the recording save?
Crystal:Your first question is about the recording?
Jimmy:It is causally important.
Crystal:You have a cat standing on your sternum.
Jimmy:Which cat?
Crystal:At this point, whichever one respects me least.
Jason:The guacamole is safe.
Harrietta:Why are you still holding it?
Jason:History asked something of me.
The server rack begins rebooting.
The UPS display reads:
SNAPSHOT CREATED: 11:48 P.M.
Then:
SYSTEM TIME CORRECTION IN PROGRESS.
The display rolls backward.
11:47.
10:32.
9:08.
7:12.
The smart speaker upstairs CHIMES.
Crystal’s Recorded Voice:Jimmy is right. Do not let Crystal press the red button. Silver knows.
Everyone listens.
The loop is complete.
The basement lights return.
The extra Silver flickers and vanishes.
Holographic Silver disappears.
One physical Silver remains, sitting on Jimmy.
Crystal:There. One cat.
Jason:Which one?
Crystal:Mine.
The server fans slow.
Jimmy checks his laptop.
Jimmy:TOMORROW has stopped.
Harrietta:Future events?
Jimmy:Cleared.
Jason:Time drift?
Jimmy:Zero.
Crystal:Burrito charge?
Jason checks his phone.
Jason:Still forty-eight dollars and sixty-three cents.
Crystal:Then the universe has achieved balance.
JIMMY stands and brushes himself off.
Jimmy:So, to summarize—
Crystal:No.
Jimmy:This is important.
Crystal:We lived it.
Jimmy:The original anomaly was real.
Crystal:Because I created the message.
Jimmy:Which proved my prediction.
Crystal:Which caused me to create the message.
Jimmy:Meaning I was right.
Crystal:Because I made you right.
Jimmy:Because I was already right.
Crystal:Because I later made you right.
Jimmy:After I correctly said you would.
Crystal:Because you heard me say it.
Jimmy:Because you said it.
Crystal:Because you told me to say it.
Jimmy:Because I heard you say it.
Crystal:You did not originate a single fact.
Jimmy:Neither did you.
Crystal:I originated the voice.
Jimmy:You copied the words.
Crystal:From myself.
Jimmy:From the future.
Crystal:Which was me.
Jimmy:Because of me.
Crystal:Because of the machine you misconfigured.
Jimmy:The machine functioned exactly as the loop required.
Crystal:You accidentally built a time problem.
Jimmy:And correctly identified it.
Crystal:After it identified itself to you in my voice.
Jason:They are going to do this forever.
Harrietta:No.
She steps between them.
Harrietta:Jimmy was right about the anomaly.
Jimmy smiles.
Harrietta:Crystal caused the evidence.
Crystal smiles.
Harrietta:Jimmy’s configuration created the mechanism.
Crystal’s smile widens.
Harrietta:Crystal’s future prank completed the loop.
Jimmy’s smile returns.
Harrietta:Neither one deserves sole credit.
Both smiles vanish.
Jason:A fair ruling. Therefore, both parties remain equally unbearable.
Crystal:I can accept that.
Jimmy:I would phrase it differently.
Crystal:Of course you would.
They head upstairs.
Jimmy stays behind, looking at the red button.
JASON pauses beside him.
Jason:You know what bothers me?
Jimmy:The message had no original author.
Jason:No. Crystal said “Silver knows,” but Silver never actually told us anything.
They both look at Silver.
Silver sits on the server rack.
Jimmy:Maybe that was just part of the message.
Jason:Or he knew exactly how to complete the loop.
Silver reaches behind the rack and pulls out the old folded note.
DO NOT LET KEVIN LIGHT THE BLUE CANDLE.
Jimmy stares.
Jimmy:How did he get that?
Jason slowly smiles.
Jason:Interesting.
Crystal, From Upstairs:Jason, if you say “interesting,” I am locking the basement!
Jason puts the note in his pocket.
Jason:Nothing.
He and Jimmy head upstairs.
Silver remains.
The smart speaker in the basement softly CHIMES.
Smart Speaker:New prediction scheduled.
Silver meows.
Smart Speaker:Confirmed.
CUT TO BLACK.
TAG
INT. JIMMY AND CRYSTAL’S KITCHEN, SATURDAY MORNING
The kitchen is spotless again.
Crystal drinks tea while using the Cricut.
Jimmy enters carrying his laptop.
Jimmy:Good news. I corrected the time source, rebuilt the message broker, removed predictive replay, isolated the backup network, and disconnected the coax line.
Crystal:Did you sleep?
Jimmy:For twenty-three minutes.
Crystal:You look like a printer after a paper jam.
Jimmy:The system is stable.
Crystal:Good.
Jimmy:I also wrote a detailed incident report.
Crystal:Delete it.
Jimmy:It is forty-seven pages.
Crystal:Delete it slowly.
Jimmy:The executive summary is only six pages.
Crystal:Jimmy.
Jimmy:Two pages if I reduce the margins.
Crystal lifts a finished Cricut mug.
It reads:
JIMMY WAS RIGHT*
Below, in much smaller print:
*BECAUSE CRYSTAL CAUSED THE EVIDENCE, THE EQUIPMENT, THE RESPONSE, THE RECORDING, THE LOOP, AND MOST OF THE INTERESTING PARTS.
Jimmy reads it.
Jimmy:The equipment was mine.
Crystal:Read the footnote again.
The doorbell rings.
Jason and Harrietta enter.
Jason carries a white bakery box.
Harrietta:We brought red velvet cake.
Crystal:Perfect.
Jason:It was waiting on our porch when we got home.
Harrietta:We did not order it.
Crystal and Jimmy stare at the box.
JASON sets it on the counter.
A label reads:
DELIVERED TOMORROW.
Jimmy:Nobody open it.
Crystal:Agreed.
Harrietta:Absolutely.
Jason:Of course.
A pause.
They all stare at the box.
Jason slowly reaches toward it.
Harrietta:Jason.
Jason:I am only checking the seal.
Crystal:That is how the tin started.
Jimmy:Do not touch it.
The box speaks.
Box:Jason is wrong.
Jason freezes.
Crystal smiles.
Crystal:I like this paradox.
Jason looks at the box, then at the others.
Jason:Give me until 7:12.
CUT TO BLACK.
